小学校らしさを残しながら機能を刷新する
2017年に成田市が公募したプロポーザルである「久住第二小学校跡地利活用に係る事業者の再募集」において、運営受託者として選定されたリオン不動産が運営する宿泊施設の計画である。
6年間ほど使われずに廃校となっていた久住第二小学校は片廊下式の純粋な学校建築で、南側の校庭は広々としていた。日本の玄関口である成田国際空港に近接し、ここから次の日に旅に向かう出発点としての宿泊施設とキャンプ場を整備すること、またその宿のネーミングやロゴタイプなどのブランディングまで一気通貫した計画を求められた。
事前に開発行為申請を経て用途変更が可能となるように手を加え、改修工事を行う流れで計画を進めた。幸い建築自体は非常にきれいに管理されていたため、大きく手を加えて改修することなく、小学校らしさや子供たちのスケール感に合わせた各部のディテールを丁寧に残しながら表層を更新する手法で設計を行った。特に長い片廊下は梁のスパンごとにボールド状のフレームを挿入し、奥まで見通す景観が単調にならず、また空港のターミナルに見られる番号式の誘導サインを各部屋にしつらえ、連続的にそれらが見えることで旅への期待感を増幅することを意図した。
もともと下駄箱のあった玄関は、エントランスロビーとして宿泊者を出迎える。カウンターは30mm角のヒノキ材で格子状に立ち上げ、成田山新勝寺などのある歴史風土や伝統的な日本らしさを感じられる意匠を施し、外国人の来訪者も楽しめるデザインコンシャスな空間を目指した。
特に運営者が地域と結びつき、交流しながら地域イベントなどを企画し、子供たちも楽しめる施設運営がなされている。より地域と深く関係を築き、地域の振興に主体的な役割を担う施設となっていくことを願っている。
An accommodation that enhances the enjoyment of traveling with renewed functions while retaining the characteristics of an elementary school.
This is a plan for a lodging facility operated by Lion Real Estate, which was selected as the management contractor in the “Re-solicitation of Business Operators for the Utilization of the Former Site of Kuzumi Dai2 Elementary School,” a proposal publicly solicited by Narita-shi in 2017.
Kuzumi Dai2 Elementary School, which had been closed for about six years, was a pure one-corridor school building with a spacious schoolyard on the south side. The school is located near Narita International Airport, the gateway to Japan, and we were asked to develop a lodging facility and campground as a starting point for the next day’s journey, as well as a comprehensive plan for the branding of the lodging, including naming and logotype.
The project was planned in such a way that it would be possible to change the use of the building through the application for development in advance, and then carry out renovation work. Fortunately, the building itself was very clean and well maintained, so we did not need to make any major alterations to the building. Instead, we designed the building in a way to update the surface while carefully preserving the details of each part of the building to match the scale of the elementary school and the children. In the long corridor in particular, a bold frame was inserted at each beam span to prevent monotony in the view through to the end of the corridor, and numbered guidance signs, similar to those found in airport terminals, were placed in each room to amplify the sense of anticipation for the journey by providing a continuous view.
The entrance, which originally had a shoe box, has been transformed into an entrance lobby to welcome guests. The counter is made of 30mm square cypress wood and is latticed to create a design that evokes the historical climate and traditional Japanese atmosphere of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, aiming to create a design-conscious space that foreign visitors can enjoy.
In particular, the management of the facility is connected to the local community, interacting with them and planning local events that the children can enjoy. I hope that the facility will build a deeper relationship with the local community and become a facility that plays a proactive role in the promotion of the community.
